JJ Foodservices unwraps new newspaper-effect fish and chip boxes

Wrapping fish and chips in newspaper may have been banned since the 1980s, but JJ Foodservice is bringing the retro vibe back with its new takeaway boxes.

The food-safe, biodegradable boxes have been launched following feedback from more than 60 fish & chip shop customers. In the company’s survey, 45% of the respondents said they wanted a newspaper-effect box design.

When shopping for packaging, 84% of shop owners said that price is crucial. This was followed by quality (70%), heat retention (65%) and sturdiness (48%). 40% specifically asked for biodegradable or compostable options.

“Our team has been working hard to come up with a design that combines all this feedback,” said marketing manager Omar El-Haj. “The result is a robust, eye-catching box that keeps food hot and crispy while being biodegradable and compostable.”

With the staycation boom expected to benefit UK hospitality, 97% of shops said they expect to need more packaging in 2021.

The easy-to-build boxes are available in 5″, 9″, 10″ and 12″ and are priced from 6p per box.
