JJ Foodservice increases London HGV driver salaries to £40K

JJ Foodservice has increased salaries by £5,000 to £40,000 for HGV drivers at its London branches (Enfield, Dagenham and Sidcup).

“Drivers already have a hard job – we want to create the best working environment for them with the comfort of an office job,” said head of operations Sedat Kaan Hendekli.

In addition to the salary increase, the wholesaler is offering state-of-the-art vehicles, no evenings or weekends, local deliveries, no rotas or shift work and consistent start times.

“On top of offering a great work-life balance, our drivers have a stable, daily routine and the support of a driver’s mate,” said Hendekli.

“Offering excellent working conditions for drivers will help us to grow our delivery team to support even more customers in the future,” he added.

With just 1% of UK HGV drivers female, JJ is actively encouraging more females to consider HGV driver roles.

In other news, JJ Foodservice has been named National Wholesaler of the Year at the Grocer Gold Awards.

Judges were looking for innovation, great service and strong results, and JJ was shortlisted along with Booker, Brakes, Bidfood and Bestway.

Commenting on the win, JJ CEO Mustafa Kiamil, said: “We are extremely proud of our team who have worked hard throughout the pandemic to provide a first-class service to customers.”

The north London-based wholesaler hit sales of £225 million for the year to 31 December 2020, up 1.3% on the previous year.

This was largely due to its direct-to-consumer, next-day home delivery division, JJ Home, which was launched within eight hours of the first lockdown announcement. More than 30,000 customers signed up within weeks as consumers sought alternatives to the large supermarkets.

“Our success is entirely down to the hard work of our team and the support of our customers and supplier partners who, together, make up the JJ family,” said Kiamil.
