Guidance updated on face masks in cash & carries

The Cabinet Office has updated its guidance on the wearing of face masks in cash & carry/wholesale depots in England.

This follows a statement given to Cash & Carry Management on 4 August saying that face coverings must be worn in wholesale depots restricted to trade-only customers and conflicting advice given to the FWD.

To discuss and clarify the guidance, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Department of Health & Social Care (DHSC) met this afternoon. The Cabinet Office then contacted Cash & Carry Management with the following information:

The guidance below has been agreed between Defra and DHSC policy colleagues:
  • A place open to the public: face covering required.
  • A place that is a mixture of open to the public and trade members: you have to wear a face covering. This includes large warehouses (Costco) and a smaller cash & carry that a member of the public can go into.
  • A place that is trade only, and has absolutely no area or ability for a member of the public to buy anything: face coverings are not required.
