Booker HGV drivers agree to new pay deal

HGV drivers at Booker’s Thamesmead site have voted ‘overwhelmingly’ for a new pay deal, the terms of which are confidential.

This followed a threat of strike action by the drivers and lengthy talks between Booker Retail Partners and the union Unite.

The crux of the dispute was that Booker had put in place a temporary £5-an-hour pay rise for drivers at its Hemel Hempstead depot because of the HGV driver shortage, but then refused to implement a similar uplift for the drivers at the Thamesmead site.

Commenting on the new agreement, Unite regional officer Paul Travers said: “Unite is very pleased  to announce that our drivers employed by the Tesco-owned Booker Retail Partners at its Thamesmead site have voted overwhelmingly for a new pay deal.

“It is a good deal that owes much to the solidarity that our members displayed during the dispute. The details of the offer remain confidential.

“Our members are working normally and we wish to have a constructive dialogue with the management as we move forward.”
