Decline in Booker Group’s like-for-like sales

Booker Group’s total sales (including the recently-acquired Budgens and Londis business) increased by 10.5% in the 16 weeks to 1 January compared with the previous corresponding period. Non-tobacco income grew by 11.9%, with tobacco alone up by 7.4%.

Booker’s like-for-like turnover (including Makro branches) was down by 3.1%, with non-tobacco reduced by 1.3% and tobacco by 6.9%.

The period saw deflation in food prices and many customers reporting weak consumer demand. Tobacco income continued to be affected by the display ban.

The company reported that Booker Direct, Chef Direct and Ritter-Courivaud “performed as we expected”.

Chief executive Charles Wilson commented: “Booker Group continued to make progress in a challenging market.”
