Best-one recruits former Costcutter and Mace stores

Best-one recruited 60 former Costcutter and Mace stores last month, bringing the total number of best-one stores to more than 1,650. The chain also recorded 19% sales growth over the four weeks compared with the previous corresponding period.

The additions follow the upheaval caused by the demise of Palmer & Harvey, which serviced both Costcutter and Mace.

Tony Holmes, sales director of Bestway Wholesale, said: “From Aberdeen in the north to Plymouth in the south, I have been overwhelmed by the feedback we have been receiving from ex-Costcutter and Mace members.

“They were badly let down in the supply chain, the vast majority being disillusioned that they received no communication or support. Retailers need wholesale partners who want to provide great service, not just lip service.”

Holmes added that in the coming months the new fascias would be erected and shopkeepers would be encouraged to focus on fresh, chilled and frozen food.

Bestway has also enlarged its Coventry chilled distribution centre.

Holmes commented: “Our depots are doing a fantastic job to fulfil orders, so are confident that we can meet the needs of our new members.”
