£15 million outlay at Wing Yip Croydon site
Oriental food specialist Wing Yip is spending £15 million to almost double the size of its Croydon site – from 41,000 sq ft to 75,000 sq ft.
The work, which has already started, includes the installation of a new cold store, entrance lobby, extended shop area and additional parking.
A spokesperson told Cash & Carry Management: “While it’s early days, we anticipate taking on an extra 20 staff, bringing the total to about 85.”
The development at the site, which opened in 1995, follows other projects undertaken in recent years at the branch in Cricklewood, north-west London, and at the Nechells, Birmingham, headquarters, which now stretches over 10 acres with the acquisition of surrounding land. Wing Yip’s other branch is in Manchester.
Asked how advanced the company is in opening at two other locations – Cardiff and Nottingham, first mooted several years ago – the spokesperson said: “This is on hold at the moment because of all the other work going on.”
London store director Albert Yip said: “While 20 years ago we specialised in Chinese groceries, these days shopping trolleys are likely to include authentic products from across the Far East, including Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Thailand.”
Total turnover of Wing Yip is over £100 million.
